Description

The Vela Spiral Flame Nebula is a gigantic cloud of gas and dust left over from a massive star explosion. This remnant is famous for its intricate, twisted Oxygen filaments that represent the Spiral and Gum 18 Ha dust clouds below which represents the Flame. It's a vast structure, visible only in radio and optical wavelengths with special filters, due to its faintness. The Vela SNR is one of the closest supernova remnants to Earth, located about 800 light-years away.
